Hickey lifts new world records

Drumconrath's Austin Hickey was once again the toast of the weightlifting world in Moscow last week when he broke five world records to claim gold at the AWPC drug free European Powerlifting Championships.

A former footballer with Drumconrath and Meath juniors Hickey competed in the 100kg body wight category and preceded to smash five world records.
On the first day of competition the Drumonrath man lifted 271kg in the squat to set a new world record and he emulated that achievement by bench pressing 185kg and deadlifting 273kg for a 729 total.
On day two he returned to hoist 265kg in the single lift deadlift to achieve yet another personal and world's best.
Hickey was the only Irish competitor in action in Moscow as he brought his medal count to 19 golds, five silvers and 11 bronzes in the nine European and seven World Championships he has competed in during his eight-year career.
