Conlon goes for O'Byrne as all is set for OCI election

Irish boxer Mickey Conlon has expressed his view that Bernard O'Byrne should be elected as the new president of the Olympic Council of Ireland.

O'Byrne, who lives in Athboy, is in contention for the presidency along with Willie O'Brien and Sarah Keane.

Conlon ,who won bronze at the 2012 Olympic Games, has turned to professional boxing after a glittering career in the amateur ranks, tweeted he would like to see O'Byrne elected.

'I'd go for Bernard O'Byrne a new face who will change the same old patterns in the OCI,' he tweeted.

In last summer's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro Conlon controversially lost out to Russia's Vladimir Nikitin.

A resident of Athboy O'Byrne is the former chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland and is currently head of Basketball Ireland.

The election takes place tonight at the Conrad Hotel, Dublin and will attract a great deal of limelight.

PJ Nolan the farmer from outside Navan and who is well known in cycling circles is among the nominations for the OCI Board in tonight's elections.
