Ireland find the golf tough in Scotland

Headfort's Maria O'Reilly is a new face on the the Irish Senior Women's golf team that is in action in Scotland at the Senior Home International at Alyth Golf Club until tomorrow.

Ireland entered the matches as Senior European team champions and feature a combination of new blood and experience in this year’s team.

Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna), Sheena McElroy (Grange), Gertie McMullen (The Island), Laura Webb (East Berkshire) and Carol Wickham (Laytown and Bettystown) bring their knowledge and expertise from previous matches
to the team.

Maria O’Reilly (Headfort) and Mary Sheehy (Tralee) will be hoping to emulate the determination that secured them a place on the team to obtain the trophy for Ireland at the end of the week.

TUESDAY

Day 1 began as a tight affair with all three of the morning foursomes matches heading down the 18th hole.

Unfortunately however, it was England who won the opening session claiming the 18th in two of the matches, leaving them with 2 ½ points from 3 heading into the afternoon singles.

Ireland’s luck didn’t increase after lunch although both Carol Wickham (Laytown & Bettystown) and Laura Webb (East Berkshire) got off to a good start.
Three and four up through seven holes respectively, they closed out their matches 2&1 and 5&4 adding to the half point secured in the morning foursomes.

It was not to be for the Irish in the other three matches however as Mary Sheehy, Maria O’Reilly and Gertie McMullen fell short securing a 5 ½ to 2 ½ win for England.
