McGrath takes a step closer to Tbilisi

Bohermeen AC’s Kevin McGrath took a significant step closer to securing a place on the Irish team for the European Athletics Youths Championships in Tbilisi later this summer when he secured second place in the Noel Carroll Grade A 800m at the Irish Milers meet at Irishtown track, Dublin.

McGrath’s time of one minute, 49.77 seconds was a new personal best by almost a full second and the strong display puts him firmly in line for the flight to the capital of Georgia.

The race pacemaker brought the field through the opening lap of the race held last Friday evening slightly ahead of schedule, close to 52 seconds, with McGrath going through in 53 seconds.

The 17-year-old Bohermeen AC runner moved through the field and into second place with 300m to go. However, Kieran Kelly, a seasoned senior from Raheny, claimed first place on the line in a time of one minute, 48 seconds.

McGrath, at least had the consolation of breaking the one minute, 50 second barrier.

McGrath will have happy memories of Tbilisi as he won the 1,500m at the European Youth Olympics Festival in the city last summer.
McGrath’s next event is likely to be at the Senior Irish Championships at Santry Stadium.

Another Bohermeen athlete, Rose Finnegan, was also in action at Irishtown and she clocked an excellent time of two minutes, 10 seconds in the 800m.
