Cushinstown athletes in good form

Cushinstown athletes Elizabeth Morland (pictured centre) and Keith Marks enjoyed outstanding success at the Junior and u-23 Indoor Championships in Athlone IT last weekend.

Following on from her national record the previous weekend Morland was back in action focusing on the junior long jump and 60m hurdles.

Her jump of 5.70m in the first round was her best of the competition and proved more than enough to secure her the gold medal.

There was joy too in the 60m hurdle as Morland stormed to victory shocking herself and the crowd with a new personal best time of 8.43s.

In an interview after the competition Morland said she was delighted with her hurdles result and hopes to qualify for the World Juniors in Poland later on this summer.

The 17-year-old Skryne girl’s performance saw her become the second fastest Irish junior in the 60m hurdle and the fourth fastest on the Irish senior list for the same discipline.

Keith Marks emerged from his winter training in tremendous form with his first place finish in the junior long jump. His leap of 7.15m was a massive new personal best and a perfect start to the 2016 season.

Cushinstown athlete Shane Joyce also jumped well in the Junior triple jump.

His personal best performance of 14.02m won the silver medal.

Joyce also finished second in the shot putt with a throw of 13.08m.

Dónal Kearns put on a brilliant show in the 60m hurdles to winning his first National u-23 medal.

His third place finish and personal best performance of 9.14s was a real demonstration of keeping your cool as athletes all around him faltered over the 3’6” barriers.
