Kirwan makes his mark at oldcastle 5k
There was a good turn out for the annual Oldcasle 5k road race promoted by St Brigid's AC this evening with the winner, Mark Kirwan of Raheny Shamrocks, taking home the Marie Monaghan Memorial Cup after he clocked an impressive 15 minutes and 23 seconds for the event.
That gave him almost a minute to spare over second-placed Shane Toner (16.12) of Glenmore AC with local Eanan McPartland (16.58) in third place.
Navan AC's Ciara Rooney was the first female home in 19.03 with Sinead Eachrett (19.15) in second, the runner-up won the South O'Hanlon 5k two weeks ago in 18.37. Mary Hanley from Na Fianna was third in 20.04.
Mullingar Harriers took the team award ahead of St Brigid's and Dunshaughlin.
The Oldcastle Meet and Train group helped launch the Oldcastle 5K and many of the members of that group took part in the race and walk - full results in the next edition of the Meath Chronicle out next Tuesday evening with photos from the event also.
