Moynalty cyclist on irish team

Sixteen-year-old Moynalty cyclist Luke Smith has been selected to compete on the Irish Team in the European Youth Olympics in Tbilisi, Georgia from Sunday 26th July to Saturday 1st August.

The teenager enhanced his reputation at the weekend when he won the Senior A3 race at the Moynalty Grand Prix on Sunday, a race he had to get special permission to ride in.

The event was viewed as good preparation for Smith ahead of the European Youth Olympics, but not only did he manage to put in a good display he won the event getting the better of much more experienced cyclists.

The European Youth Olympics is a wonderful opportunity for Smith to compete against some of the world’s best young cyclists.

Some 41 countries will have athletes competing in a series of events which include athletics, handball, judo, basketball, gymnastics and cycling.

The victory at his own club’s Grand Prix was a huge confidence-booster for Smith ahead of what is a big challenge in Georgia.
