Vintage contenders for big navan race on sunday

The Dermot Weld-traiend Forgotten Rules will make his seasonal reappearance in Sunday’s €65,000 Group 3 Coolmore Vintage Crop Stakes at Navan. The five-year-old has won his three starts to date including Group 2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup at Ascot last October in which he defeated Biographer, which will also run.

Navan Racecourse Manager, Peter Killeen said, “It’s fantastic to see our Group race attracting such quality horses and indeed a sponsor such as Coolmore. On what is our annual family day there is not only a terrific card for the racing enthusiasts but there is also side attractions for all the family. All the family activities on the day are free of charge.”

“It will be the start of what I hope will be a long year for Forgotten Rules. The plan is that he’ll run on Sunday and he is as fit as I’d want him to be at this stage,' commented Dermot Weld.

“He loves a good dig in the ground and hopefully he’ll get that on Sunday. Good ground suits him as well, it doesn’t have to be heavy or anything, but he is very well for his first run and hopefully we have left plenty of room for improvement, he added.”

The David Lanigan-trained Biographer will be ridden by George Baker in Sunday’s contest.

“The ground should be fine for him, they've been getting plenty of rain and the ground is soft at the moment. I just thought the Yorkshire Cup looked a tough race this year and Navan looked a better spot to start him off and you couldn't be sure about the ground at York. It could be quick by Friday,' commented trainer

Other possible runners in Sunday’s contest include the improving Answered for Jim Bolger and Andy Oliver’s Panama Hat which improved no end last year, winning five races on the bounce and rounded off the campaign rated 110, having started the season on a lowly 61.
