Meath minor footballers were edged out by neighbours Cavan in the first round of the Ulster MFL today.

Minor manager Davy Dalton told the Meath Chronicle that he would be using the competition to assess players.

"We have a big panel and we want to give everyone a chance to make an impression," he said.

Meath were ahead by 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time, but changes and injuries disrupted fluency after the break and Cavan claimed a crucial late goal.

Meath will play Armagh next week in the second round at Crossmaglen.
