Students go racing with a difference

Some 45 third level students took part in a Horse Racing Ireland-promoted Go Racing Student Society industry education day and went behind the scenes at trainer Gordon Elliott’s yard in Longwood this morning.

Students from various colleges including NUI Maynooth, University of Limerick, UCD, Trinity College, Dublin IT and Griffith College, met with leading trainer Gordon Elliott and got to witness first-hand the work carried out by his team on a daily basis.

They were also introduced to stable stars Outlander, Apple’s Jade, Cause Of Causes, Empire Of Dirt, Death Duty and Samcro.

The students then returned to Fairyhouse for lunch and an action-packed afternoon of National Hunt racing with a real Meath flavour as Meath jockey Robbie Power recorded a double, another Meath jockey Roger Loughran was also on the mark and for good measure, Gordon Elliott won the opening race  when Mitchouka scored under Davy Russell.
