Bohermeen jockey Johnny Murtagh was on the mark with Starspangledbanner in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket yesterday.

The former Australian sprinter looked beaten a furlong out a, but found plenty for the Meath jockey to win by a neck.

"Not many horses win this race after winning at Ascot, but he has got plenty of guts, stamina helped, some Australian horses don't go up the hill, but this lad does," commented Murtagh in a post-race interview.

Murtagh was handed a six-day ban for careless riding following his move towards the rail after the start.

The suspension will rule Murtagh out from 23rd - 28th July which includes the King George meeting at Ascot and the first two days of Goodwood.
