Cortown crowned jfc champions after thriller

Cortown claimed the JFC title for the inaugural Peter McDermott Cup with a 1-11 to 1-10 victory in today’s replayed decider against Dunboyne.

True to the Cortown tradition, the players produced a never-say-die display that saw them survive 20 second-half minutes without a score as they defended stoutly and faced into the closing stages with a two-point lead.

Wind-assisted Cortown dictated the opening half and were well worth a 0-8 to 0-3 interval advantage with Glen Loughran sending over four frees.

Michael Dunne scored two points (one free) and Niall Carolan also pointed to keep Dunboyne in touch.

Cortown did enough to stay in front in the second-half and looked home and hosed when Breen Smith netted with a minute remianing, but Dunboyne countered instantly with a Philip Darcy goal.

However, Cortown held on and will be able to celebrate properly next weekend at the wedding of goalkeeper John McFadden who, it is understood, has told his future wife that she couldn't have found a safer pair of hands???
