Meath's Elaine Plunkett in action during Saturday's Ladies All-Ireland SFC qualifier against Cavan.

Ladies dumped out

Meath's hopes of a prolonged run in the Ladies All-Ireland SFC came to a sudden halt at Páirc Táilteann on Saturday when they were stunned by Cavan 0-13 to 1-15.

Cavan came to Navan with a much changed side from the one that claimed the All-Ireland IFC crown last year and on off the back of a heavy defeat to Monaghan in the first round of the Ulster SFC.

The Breffni girls also lost to Meath in NFL Div 2 in the spring and were massive underdogs for Saturday's clash. However, they defied the odds with Geraldine Sheridan's goal boosting them to a 1-6 to 0-7 interval lead.

After the resumption Cavan continued to dominate and stretched their lead to 1-13 to 0-9 with 10 minutes remaining as Claragh O'Reilly ran the show.

Inspired by the excellent Emma Troy Meath did manage to reduce the gap to four points, but when Katie O'Brien was sin-binned in injury-time it ended any prospect of a Royal recovery and left Meath out of the running at the first hurdle.
