Exciting residential transition year programme at Coláiste na Rinne

The Irish language College, Coláiste na Rinne is stunningly located on a 25 acre coastal campus in West Co Waterford. It is renowned for its long standing Boarding School, Scoil na Leanaí, for sixth class pupils and its summer courses for secondary school students. In recent years however, it has been expanding its services to include a wide range of new Irish language courses including the introduction of an exciting Residential Transition Year Programme. The course was officially launched by Irish Language Comissioner Rónán Ó Domhnaill earlier in the year and already keen interest has been shown by parents and students across the country. The course begins in September and is a Monday to Friday programme with students being accommodated on Campus from Sunday evening until late afternoon Fridays.

Students who are positively disposed to the Irish language and culture and who have a good working knowledge of Irish are invited to apply. Spaces are limited and applicants will be invited to interview in April. The course is aimed at students who want to perform well in Irish in their leaving certificate in order to pursue career opportunities in teaching, journalism, law, translation / interpreting and cultural tourism to mention but a few. It is also suitable for students who attended Gaelscoileanna and want to refresh their command of the Irish language as well as for those students who like the Irish language and culture and want to experience it in its natural setting. Being a residential course, this new Transition Year will also appeal to students who want to experience a year of independent living where they get to meet many new people and forge new friendships. Special discounts are being offered to Transition Year participants to attend a summer course at Coláiste na Rinne in preparation for the September 2016 Transition Year immersion programme.

The Transition Year course on offer is an action packed one and will be delivered in close partnership with the local secondary School, Méanscoil San Nioclás. Liam Suipéil, Manager at Coláiste na Rinne siad “This new programme is a collaboration between two Gaeltacht na nDéise schools, with the Transition Year programme being modelled on the one which has been successfully delivered for a number of years at Meánscoil San Nioclás, the local secondary school.” The programme will include academic tuition, work experience, excursions, experience in the performing and visual arts, an opportunity to test the entrepreneurial spirit through the establishment of mini-companies and participation in the Gaisce awards. There are extensive sporting facilities on campus, including tennis courts, pitch and putt, basketball, handball alley and several playing pitches. The new Transition Year programme also offers students a module in Film and TV production which will be delivered by experienced producers who are based in West Wateford. Also hugely popular among students is the Junk Kouture national competition which encourages young designers to create striking couture designs and impressive works of wearable art from everyday junk. Junk Kouture has established itself as the premier fashion competition for teenagers throughout the island and Meánscoil San Nioclás transition year students have been at the forefront in receiving awards and accolades in this hugely popular competition. Being a coastal campus Transiton Year students also get to participate in water sports in association with local Adventure Centres and the many day and overnight excursions organised as part of the course.

Students will be accommodated in the main, three storey college building with each student having their private space comprising a single bed, locker and wardrobe.
