Bellinter native television and film director, Garret Daly, was one of the finalists in the recent online RTE competition, 'Storyland'. His Tullamore-based company, Mixed Bag Media, produced a TV series called 'Rental Boys' which made it to the final of the online initiative.

Although the project is primarily filmed in Dublin, the pre-production, editing, sound mixing and mastering were all completed at his company facility in the midlands. 'Rental Boys', is a comedy about two rival video stores in Dublin and it's the first series from newcomer writer Gemma Creagh.

It stars members of the comedy group Diet and Worms and the crew is made up of Offaly and Dublin based practitioners.

RTÉ Storyland started back in March of this year with ten programmes featured online. The public were then asked to vote for the one that they'd most like to see re-commissioned. 'Rental Boys' made it to the final, which was won by 'Hardy Bucks'.

"The budgets are fairly small so we've approached the series as a training ground for crew and cast," says Daly, the series producer and director. "Online is the format of the future and RTÉ are testing the medium through this competition. I'm delighted that the series can generate local employment within the industry. It's a busy time. I'm also recording a radio series in Meath at the moment for Lyric FM called 'Soundscapes of Ireland'. I'm trying to capture the sound of every county and I'm enjoying working in my home county for a change.

Garret says: "I'm delighted that we got to the final. It started out as a small project but we've gathered up lots of support and interest. The public voted us through each time which also gives you confidence." See Mixed Bag Media is based in Tullamore and the company has produced many successful broadcast projects, including 'Grassroots of the GAA' for TV3, 'The Edge of Europe' on RTE, RTE Radio One documentaries and series as well as a number of programmes on RTE Lyric FM.
