Kilskyre NS not threatened with closure

Dear sir - The board of management, staff and parents association of Kilskyre NS would like to express annoyance about an article which appeared in last week's edition of the Meath Chronicle, about recent changes in the Budget which will affect small schools in the county. Kilskyre School was listed as a school with an enrolment of less than 86 children and therefore it was named as one of the schools threatened with closure or amalgamation. The enrolment figures used in the article were 2010 figures and hence are not correct today. At present there are 88 children on the roll in Kilskyre National School. The current retention figure for four teachers is 81, this figure will increase to 86 over the next three years. In the past five years the enrolment in Kilskyre has gone from 35 children to 88, which shows our school has been going from strength to strength. We feel that this article gives the wrong impression to the public and parents of potential pupils about the future of Kilskyre National School. Our neighbouring school in the parish has the same enrolment as us yet they were not listed as a school facing possible closure or amalgamation. There are also several other two and three teacher schools within the county which were not listed in the article.

We would question why only certain schools were named and also why the Meath Chronicle did not contact schools directly to get accurate information before going to press with this story.

As a result of this article we have been in undated with calls from parents about the future of their children's education and that of the school. We would ask that this letter is published to clarify for parents of children currently enrolled and the parents of potential pupils that Kilskyre NS is not threatened by closure or amalgamation in the near future.

Yours,

The Board of Management,

Staff and

Parents Association,

Kilskyre NS.
