McGuinness can provide leadership and vision
Dear sir - The entry of Martin McGuinness, the Deputy First Minister in the Northern Ireland Executive, into the Presidential Election has certainly provided a radical alternative. While the other established candidates are, I'm sure, fine individuals in their own right, they have not in my opinion either caught the national imagination or demonstrated how they can revive national prestige at home or abroad. Nor have they provided the platform for the desperate need for national healing and reconciliation this nation needs at this time. Our self confidence has been shattered by the utter mismanagement of our financial affairs, we see the immigration of out capable young, uncertainty in business and massive debt at State and personallevel. Ireland needs a president with the statesmanship and credibility of Martin McGuinness and his proven abilities to bring together what many thought impossible - Nationalist and Unionist traditions in a functioning Government. He leaves the Northern Executive as not only a highly effective Government - but as a model for compromise in conflict areas around the world. He can provide the leadership and vision for our recovery while being acknowledged on a European and world stage as a statesman with proven abilities.
