Higgins erects 42 posters on 3km stretch of road in Navan

Presidential election candidate, Michael D Higgins, has erected 42 posters on a short stretch of road around Navan town.
Almost every lamppost between the Ardboyne Hotel, on the Dublin side of the town, around to the Blackwater Retail Park, on the Kells side, is decorated with a Michael D Higgins poster. It has been causing considerable notice around the town – which no doubt was the President's intention - but many are asking if so many posters on a 3km stretch is necessary.
When contacted for a comment last week, Michael D Higgins' campaign office said:
“We'll discuss your request at a meeting and come back to you if we have any comment. I can't guarantee there will be any response.”
So far, there has been no response from Michael D Higgins campaign office as to why it was felt necessary to erect 42 posters on the Navan ring road.
Sinn Fein candidate Liadh Ni Riada has just four posters up on the same stretch of road.
Johnstown Tidy Towns in Navan wrote to all presidential election candidates asking them not to erect their election posters in the area. Only Higgins and Ni Riada are using posters in this campaign.
Following a discussion, the committee members came to a unanimous decision to write to all candidates urging them not to hang posters in the Johnstown community, which is close to the Navan road..
In an email sent to President Michael D Higgins, Alan Lawes, chairperson of Johnstown Tidy Towns said they felt the posters “are unnecessary, environmentally damaging, visually overpowering and being honest, a complete waste of money”.
