Liverpool fans send best wishes to Sean Cox from Rome

Family of Sean Cox says thanks for support as Liverpool fan remains critical

Dunboyne GAA and the Cox family have issued a statement thanking all who have sent them messages of support, including the Liverpol and Roma football clubs, as Sean Cox remains critically ill following an assault at last week's Champions League game at Anfield.

Issued by Fergus McNulty, chairman, St Peter's GAA Club, it reads:  "The past week has been a very difficult one for Sean, his family, his large circle of friends and his colleagues at St Peter's GAA Club, as Sean remains in a critical condition.

"As a club, and on behalf of Sean’s family, we would like to express our appreciation for the huge number of messages and gestures of support from across our local community and beyond. The level of support from so many is overwhelming and I know this provides some comfort to Sean’s family at this time.

"We would like to acknowledge the heartfelt support received from Liverpool and Roma Football Clubs. We have been touched by their solidarity and its sincerity over the past week and it has meant a great deal to both St Peter's and Sean’s family.

"Sean, a hugely popular and respected individual, is a driving force in St Peters and it is hard to fully convey the positive impact that he has in our club.

We would ask that you keep Sean, Martina, and Sean’s family in your thoughts and prayers. Finally, we would also appreciate that space and privacy be afforded to Sean and his family as they focus their efforts on Sean’s recovery."

Yesterday, Roma’s players prepared for tonight’s Champions League semi-final, second leg against Liverpool by training in t-shirts with the message ‘Forza Sean’ in solidarity with the Sean Cox, who has spent seven days in a coma after being attacked by Roma fans outside Anfield.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hailed the move.  “Great, great, great gesture. I already thought they showed a great gesture before training at Anfield at the memorial for the 96,” said Klopp, referencing Roma’s laying a wreath in memory of the Hillsborough victims a week ago.

“In these moments at least football fans should stay together and show this kind of respect.”

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson also sent a letter of support to St Peter’s.
