Bernard Brogan hosts GAA volunteer camp in Trim

As part of their recently launched #BehindTheBall campaign, SuperValu is set to host a series of volunteer camps across the country. Designed to encourage and increase vital volunteer numbers in GAA clubs all over Ireland,  the second of these camps will take place in Trim GAA grounds,  on Saturday 30th September at 2pm. All those interested in taking part can register in Nally’s SuperValu Trim or on Facebook.

On hand at each of the events to encourage attendees and give them the sporting edge will be SuperValu’s exciting line-up of GAA ambassadors. Dublin GAA all-star Bernard Brogan will kick things off in Trim and as a winner of four All Ireland Medals, Brogan has experienced first-hand the importance of encouraging children to get active from an early age. Playing with St Oliver Plunkett’s for over two decades, Brogan knows how crucial volunteers are to the vitality of local GAA clubs and insists that there are many ways for the local community to get involved

Brogan said: “I’m delighted to be supporting SuperValu’s very exciting Behind the Ball campaign and I’m particularly proud to be involved in their volunteer camps. Volunteers are vital for sports at a grass-roots level so it’s great to see local retailers really get behind the local clubs and encourage, educate and inspire volunteers to get involved. From coaching to car-pooling, washing jerseys to refereeing, there really is something for everyone. So whether you’re a member of your local GAA club or not this is the perfect opportunity to give back to children in your local community.”

Now in its eighth season as an official partner of the All-Ireland Football Championship, SuperValu’s network of retailers, including Nally’s SuperValu Trim, continue to show a remarkable commitment to the sport, not just at national but also regional level and typify how SuperValu can have a direct benefit to the local communities in which they are embedded. Whether it’s facilitating in-store fund-raisers, sponsoring jerseys or perimeter boards in the local communities, it is estimated that the retailers donate circa over €1,000,000 per annum collectively to local clubs throughout the country.

Steven Nally of Nally’s SuperValu Trim, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Bernard Brogan down to Trim to take part in our volunteer camp.  We know how important the GAA is the bedrock of our local community here in Trim so we’re helping to encourage as many of our customers to join us, get behind the ball and look for opportunities to volunteer in their local club. With a player like Bernard on board, our volunteer camp promises to be as much fun as it will be informative.”

Now available in all stores nationwide, SuperValu is running a nine-week programme which will see individual retailers donate 55,000 GAA footballs to clubs across the country, an ambitious initiative designed to get children as young as six playing football and exercising more regularly. Through the initiative, SuperValu customers will receive ‘#BehindTheBall’ tokens, which they can then use to allocate to a local GAA club of their choice at the in-store collection points.
