Parts of Meath to be included in Cavan-Monaghan constituency

Meath is to lose part of the Meath East constituency to a reunited Cavan Monaghan, under new boundary changes proposed by the Constituency Commission.

Drumconrath, part of Lobinstown, Meath Hill, Kilmainhamwood and Carrickleck will move into the Dáil Constituency of Cavan/Monaghan according to last night's government report.

Meath East has already lost part of the coastal area of Meath to the four seat Louth constituency.

A decision had been due on or before 6th July, and the loss of part of north Meath has been met with an angry reaction.
Cllr Paddy Meade said; 'Cutting another chunk of Meath and placing it into Cavan-Monaghan will weaken Meath’s lobbying power for services even further, thus until a day when we have a better system of national governance this alteration should be opposed not only by North Meath folk but by everyone in this county including North and South.'
The Commission was set up on 14th July last year following the publication, by the Central Statistics Office, of ‘Census of Population 2016 Preliminary Results’. The Commission was required to present its report not later than three months after the publication by the CSO of the final result of the 2016 Census, published on 6th April this year.
As part of its recommendations, Commission says: “The counties of Cavan and Monaghan, with some population from the constituency of Meath East, should form the Cavan-Monaghan constituency which should become a five seat constituency. The rest of the constituency of Meath East should remain as a three seat constituency. The constituencies of Meath West (3 seat), Louth (5 seat) and Longford-Westmeath (4 seat) should remain unchanged.”
