Durcans make final of 'Ireland's Traddest Family'

The Durcan family from Athboy will compete for the title of Ireland’s Traddest Family this Saturday night live on the Ray Darcy Show on RTÉ One.

The local family was unveiled as finalists in the trad showdown along with the Ó’Dálaighs and the Doohans, both from Co Clare, on the Ray Darcy show on RTÉ Radio 1 this afternoon.

The Durcan family comprise Shane and his wife Caitríona, and their five children Oisín, 11, Fionn, 10, Aedín, 8, Clíona, 7 and little Conall, just 4. Their set features harp, mandolin, whistle and set dancing.

The lucky winners will clinch the title of ‘Ireland’s Traddest Family’ and will also get a luxury family trip to Fota Island resort, a chance to play at St Patrick's festival weekend and VIP tickets to the St Patrick’s Day parade.

They will also get to play at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Ennis in August on the Gig Rig.

The panel of judges for this unique TV event will be singer-songwriter John Spillane, fiddle player Zoe Conway and Mike Hanrahan of Stockton’s Wing.

Ray Darcy said: ‘It is great craic. This is a great celebration of traditional Irish music. Most of our great musicians started off playing in sessions in kitchens and sitting rooms around the country. I think 'Ireland’s Traddest Family' taps into that hot bed of talent.’

Tune in to the grand final of The Ray Darcy Show's 'Ireland's Traddest Family' this Saturday night at 9.50pm on RTÉ One to see how the Durcan family get on.
