Sinn Fein Cllr Joe Reilly has called for increased Garda presence and Garda action in Market Square in Navan after a series of vicious attacks on a number of people last weekend were reported to him.

In one incident a man trying to protect his wife from attack suffered a broken eye socket. In another incident, a couple said that they were attacked between 4-5am as they waited for a taxi in the Square.
Cllr Reilly said he had been contacted by two members of the public. “In one case it is alleged that a pregnant woman was attacked and had to receive medical treatment while her husband lost his wedding ring. In another alleged incident the gentlemen’s girlfriend was attacked by a woman wielding a knife. She was left badly shaken and is now afraid to leave her home.
“One of the people also informed me of an another alleged attack on a foreign national.”
Gardai at Navan said they were actively investigating a number of incidents at the Square from last weekend.
The Cllr said: “Apart from the horrific attack on innocent people, Meath County Council and Navan Municipal District have worked hard to claim the much sought after Purple Flag. The flag represents the promotion of a positive night life in towns and cities.”
“I would urge anyone who saw anything to contact the Gardai immediately. The Gardai also need to ensure that people who allegedly attack pregnant women or innocent women with a knife are stopped.”
