Talk on suicide and self-harm this evening

The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) is hosting a free public talk on suicide and self-harm in Ireland.

It takes place this evening, Thursday 1st September, at the Cheyne Theatre Royal College of Surgeons , St Stephen’s Green at 6.30pm.

The Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) is the representative body for psychologists in Ireland with 3000 members.

In 2014, 459 people were reported to have died by suicide in Ireland (CSO, 2015). Research indicates a high correlation between suicide and self-harm. In 2014 there were 8,708 people treated for deliberate self-harm episodes, with more than 1 in 5 individuals repeatedly self-harming.

The lecture will offer an understanding of suicide and self-harm, an understanding of why some individuals engage in self-harm behaviour and an overview of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) - an internationally recognised therapy used to treat and help people who self-harm.

Clinical Psychologist Daniel Flynn will present the lecture. Daniel is an expert in the field of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT).

The lecture will include input from a service user who will share her experiences of participating in this intervention, and a family member of someone who has experienced these difficulties.
