Skerries 10th year to host Rás stage end

Skerries will once again play host to the An Post Rás finale on Sunday 29th May 2016 for a record 10th year.

This is the 11th year of the Rás, but the 10th year that the town of Skerries is the hosting the final stage end. To celebrate the 10th anniversary, Skerries Rás Stage-End Committee plan to celebrate this significant achievement with a day of festivities for the riders, cycling enthusiasts and visitors to enjoy.

Local Alma Grimes has been nominated as An Post Rás ‘Miss Rás’ who said “I am looking forward to welcoming the competing cyclists to Skerries for the final stage of the Rás and hope they enjoy the welcome and festival we will host in celebration. The enthusiastic support Skerries has for the cyclists and the Rás itself, encourages people to take up cycling and maybe we will have a local winner of the An Post Rás in the future!”

Skerries has a reputation amongst the cycling fraternity as an enjoyable route for a challenging cycle and welcomes groups of cyclists to the town at weekends who can be seen taking the coastal and country roads in the area.

This year the An Post Rás will see a strong team of riders on the Sean Kelly Irish team competing against experienced cyclists from Austria, Australian, France, Netherlands, Germany, the USA and the UK, with several more foreign teams expected to be confirmed prior to next month’s event.

The An Post Rás will total a gruelling 1233 kilometres and will include 25 categorised climbs. As well as competing daily for individual stage wins the riders will also compete for the three main jerseys; Mountain jersey, Sprinter’s jersey and the coveted Yellow jersey for the overall winner of the An Post Rás for the rider who completes the race in the shortest time. The world-ranked event gets underway on Sunday May 22 from Dublin Castle, will conclude in Skerries on May 29th.
