Care urged on icy roads throughout county

Overnight snow and ice has left many roads throughout County Meath in a treacherous condition.

While most main routes have been gritted, many secondary roads where a light dusting of snow fell during the night are very slippery and a number of minor accidents have occurred.

Temperatures plunged to -2 Degrees overnight in many parts of the county from early last night following several heavy snow showers, leaving roads and footpaths dangerous.

Road conditions are reported to be icy on the N52 Kells/Delvin Road and AA Roadwatch is urging extreme care on this route. AA Roadwatch also reports icy conditions on parts of the Ballivor/Kinnegad Road, the R161.

Secondary roads throughout parts of north Meath and around Navan and Trim are also dangerous and care is being urged on all untreated surfaces.

If you're driving in snow or ice, stopping distances are 10 times longer and the AA reminds motorists that gentle manoeuvres are the key to safe driving.

Snow showers will continue for a time in the north and west of Leinster this morning but will die out later. It will be mainly dry today with sunny spells, according to Met Eireann. Highest temperatures will be 4 to 6 degrees.

Tonight will be dry with clear spells but with a further severe frost and icy stretches on roads. There will be patches of freezing fog in places also, say forecasters.
