Bank holiday weather a real mixed bag

The bank holiday looks like a mixed bag, weather-wise, with heavy showers interspersed with sunny spells, according to Met Eireann.

It will continue cloudy this afternoon and this evening with rain, heavy at times, spreading to all areas. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with moderate to fresh south to southwest breezes.

Saturday will bring a decent amount of dry weather with some sunny spells. There will be some outbreaks of rain or drizzle moving up through south Leinster in the afternoon and early evening. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with mostly moderate southwest breezes.

On Saturday night, rain will develop in the west and spread eastwards through the night, although it will be heaviest for western coastal counties.

While Sunday will see persistent and prolonged rain affecting the western half of the country during the day and evening, there will be some dry intervals in the east, but it will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain or drizzle there too. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees, in fresh to strong south-easterly winds.

Winds will increase further on Bank Holiday Monday due to a nearby Atlantic depression, which is likely to bring strong to gale force southerly winds, with the potential for heavy showers in western areas, while parts of the east could see more dry intervals.

Met Eireann says present indications are that it will remain unsettled for the rest of the week.
