Susie Manson from Scotland, a 21 year-old shop assistant, was crowned the 2015 Blue Jean Country Queen in Athboy at the weekend. The member of Nairn JAC beat off competition from 24 girls from all over Ireland and overseas to take the title at the festival where she received €1,000 worth of prizes sponsored by Athboy Credit Union. She was crowned on Sunday night of the June Bank Holiday weekend much to the delight of the many Scottish supporters attending.
Runner-up was Longford Queen, Christina Reilly from Tir na Nog club, who was presented with €500 sponsored by Forefront Nutrition and in third place was Carlow’s Grainne Hanrahan from St Mullen’s Macra, Grainne was presented with €300 sponsored by M & G Groundworks.
Celebrating its 28th festival, members of Meath Macra na Feirme, organisers of the event, were delighted with all aspects of the weekend. Just the right amount of sunshine, huge crowds and a massive array of events organised over the weekend, was just the recipe to turn this year’s festival into one of the most successful to date. Kicking off Friday night, when the Queens were interviewed on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience, the fun and craic flowed until Monday afternoon as live music was still playing throughout the town of Athboy, the traditional home of the festival.
Speaking at the Festival Banquet, chairperson Tara Heany praised and thanked the community of Athboy for their enormous support throughout the year in preparing for the event and in particular to Athboy Credit Union, main sponsors of the festival. She thanked secretaries Claire Geogh and Siobhan Kearney and all the organising committee for the endless hours of work they had done to ensure the weekend was a success.
