Andrew at St Ciaran's Community School

Aussie soap star delights meath students

Home and Away star, Andrew Morley - better known as Spencer - delighted students of St Joseph’s Secondary School, Navan and St Ciaran’s Community School, Kells recently.
He visited the Kells school on Monday and  met pupils in Navan the previous week.
The visit to St Joseph’s came about after one of Ms Mc Inerney’s CSPE classes did an action project on animal cruelty involving the ISPCA.
The student, Lovely Angeles, saw that Andrew was coming to Ireland and noticed that he had a particular interest in an Australian animal charity called Oscar’s Law.
She invited Andrew to come to the school via email and asked him to talk to her class in relation to Oscar’s Law. Surprisingly he agreed!
Andrew came to the school along with Fiona Ryan, a member of Dogs’ Trust, and they spoke to all Third Year students in the school.
Andrew spoke about Oscar’s Law, which aims to abolish all puppy farms in Australia and Fiona talked about the Dogs’ Trust in Ireland who look after abandoned dogs and have a no-kill policy in their shelter and aim to re-home all dogs that come in to them.
After the talk, Andrew met with the wider school community in the school theatre. Signed posters were available for a fee of €5. All the proceeds of this collection, which amounted to €850, were split equally between the ISPCA, Oscar’s Law and Dogs’ Trust.
Meanwhile, the students of St Ciaran’s Community School in Kells had a pleasant surprise on Monday when Andrew paid a visit on the invitation of English teacher, Gina Reilly.
While his status as a heartthrob makes him an instant hit with teenagers, Andrew had a serious message to impart to the youngsters.
Central to his message is the idea of having respect for others and the necessity to treat all others as you would like to be treated yourself. He spoke about the dangers of social networking and bullying, using examples from his own life and this is the part of the talk that had the most powerful impact on the students.
He also took the opportunity to expound on some of the charities he supports. He supports youth mental health charity ReachOut.com and encouraged students to log on to their website to get help and advice for any worries or concerns they might have.
He also supports the 'Oscar’s Law’ campaign which aims to abolish puppy farms.
Principal Francis Laverty said; “Andrew is a truly remarkable young man who uses his celebrity to influence youngsters in a positive way and tries to show them the correct path to take in life. We were delighted to welcome him to our school and both he and his positive message will resonate long after his visit. A true star and positive role model - both on and off screen!”
