Trim winner of heritage council photo competition

A picture of generations of a family at a country market has been awarded the top prize in 2014 National Heritage Week Photography Competition, announced by the Heritage Council. ‘Day at the Market’ taken by Derry Ann Morgan from Meath was awarded first place in the Adult Category.

2014 is the UN 20th Anniversary of the International Year of the Family and to celebrate the theme for National Heritage Week 2014 was, ‘Family … generations exploring heritage together’. People were invited to submit photos interpreting the theme for this year’s competition.

Winner of the Adult Category was Derry Ann Morgan from Trim with her photo of a ‘Day at the Market’, featuring Robert and John Clarke, and taken at Girley Harvest Festival.

Winner of the Youth Category was ‘Experience’ by John O’Byrne from Kildare. John describes the photo which his father appears in as “out in the shed, rebuilding an old bicycle, trying to preserve a bit of history”.

Winner of the Junior Category was ‘Sam at the Cliffs’ by Andy O’Neill. The photo taken by Andy is of his little brother Sam, aged 3 looking over the Cliffs near the lighthouse on Clare Island. Andy describes how his dad is holding on to Sam, just out of view of the picture.

Speaking about the winning images, Michael Starrett, Heritage Council Chief executive said, “Congratulations to everyone who entered a photograph into the competition. Your enthusiasm and the variety of photographs entered reflect the diversity of Irish heritage, and what it means to us as a people and as a family.”

Prizes are divided among the three categories. The top prize in the adult category of a €500 voucher provided by the Irish Landmark Trust to stay in one of their unique and beautiful properties is sure to be of interest for anyone planning a stay-cation or a short break! Additional prizes include a, €150 One4All gift voucher, €75 One4All gift voucher, €55 euro Family Heritage Card, €50 Easons vouchers and €30 Easons vouchers.
