Vandalism attack on blackwater park

There has been a furious reaction to a major attack by vandals at Navan’s Blackwater Park at the weekend.
A stone commemorating the opening of the park was smashed, some of the equipment in the new playground which is currently being installed was damaged, railings around the playground were torn down and tyre marks destroyed an all-weather surface area.
Bottles and cans were also strewn around the place.
Cllr Wayne Forde reacted with anger to the mindless destruction.
“I was horrified to see the damage that had been done and I rang the Gardai straight away.”
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There are tyre marks in the garden area beside the playground and there was damage done to the stone commemerating the opening of our beautiful park.
“The fencing around the playground had been fully pulled down and a wooden structure for a swing was broken.
“There were empty beer bottles, and empty bottles of vodka, which I threw into the bin.
“I will be calling on Meath County Council to make sure the park is closed off at night, to try and prevent this disgraceful vandalism from occurring into the future.”
He said Meath County Council had recently installed electronic bollards and he called for these to be used when it gets dark, especially coming into the winter months, to prevent a repeat of “this despicable vandalism.”
Cllr Tommy Reilly said that a park ranger was badly needed for the park.
“The ranger could close off the park to motorists as soon as it gets dark.”
“It is a lovely spot and is widely used by the people of Navan and further afield. 'It is a shame to allow this to happen and steps must be taken to protect it,” he said.
