Human remains found at oristown bog

Gardai have begun an investigation after human remains were found in a bog near Kells.

The body was discovered as excavation work was carried out at Oristown Bog on Thursday.

Gardai confirmed on Saturday evening that the body found is that of Cavan man Gerard Daly, who went missing in 2011.

The burnt-out shell of a car which was reported stolen in Kells in 2003 was also found at the scene.

Mr Daly was last seen by his partner in Bailiborough, Co Cavan, on the evening of 26th June 2011.

State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy carried out a post-mortem examination on the remains at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, on Friday.

Gardaí confirmed a forensic examination of the scene has been carried out and their investigation is continuing.
