Get ready for heritage week 2014

Heritage Week will descend on Co Meath from tomorrow, 23rd August, with a range of events for all the family.

Events will be held throughout the county including historic walks and tours, art workshops and falconry on the Hill of Tara. Kids young and old will also have the opportunity to meet a medieval Norman knight!

Simon Harris TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works, launched the initiative on Wednesday at Trim Castle. Speaking at the event, he urged visitors and natives alike to enjoy the myriad events on offer – most of which are free of charge.

'I'm very impressed with the variety and range of events that will be on offer during Heritage Week, both at OPW-managed sites and throughout the county of Meath,' he said. 'Heritage Week is a very important fixture on the heritage calendar in terms of both its educational and cultural benefits, but also its impact on the local economies. What is particularly heartening is the level of community engagement each year, without which Heritage Week would not succeed.'

Cllr Jim Holloway, Cathaoirleach of Meath County Council, added: 'County Meath is renowned as the heritage capital of Ireland. It's wonderful to see so many events organised by so many to encourage people to get out and about and enjoy what is all around us.'
