Sellafield ordered to improve fire safety, following breaches.

Recent safety breaches at Sellafield are a health risk to people living on the East Coast, according to Cllr Eimear Ferguson.
She called on the Irish government to convey a strong message to their British counterpart’s that the Sellafield nuclear plant must close.
Her comments came after the first annual report of the British Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), ordered the Sellafield nuclear plant to improve waste containment and fire safety after inspectors found breaches at the site.
The nuclear site is approximately 180km from Ireland’s coastline and Cllr Ferguson said that since its construction it has been associated with numerous health risks to those living on Ireland’s east coast.
“This latest report, which ordered the plant to improve waste containment and fire safety will do little to ease the genuine fears of people living on the east coast of Ireland.
“The Sellafield plant continues to roll from one crisis to another. A safety scare in January when workers at the site were asked not to report for work because of the detection of elevated radiation levels at the plant would do nothing to instil confidence in the way this plane is being operated.”
Cllr Ferguson said the older facilities at Sellafield do not meet modern engineering standards and their safety therefore cannot demonstrate the high standards required for nuclear facilities.
“This latest report shows again how dangerous Sellafield is and that it continues to be a threat.
“The Irish Government need to convey a strong message to the British Government on a regular and routing basis that this plant must close,” she concluded.
