Minor breaks and fractures to be treated in Navan

News that minor breaks and fractures are now being treated in the orthopaedic unit in Our Lady’s Hospital in Navan has been warmly welcomed by hospital campaigners who described it as a step in the right direction.
The HSE confirmed this week that minor fractures, for example of the wrist or ankle, are now being reviewed with a view to having the surgery in Navan in a planned manner.
A spokesperson explained this was in response to pressure on the Emergency Department in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.
Suitable patients with minor fractures are being reviewed and where appropriate are discharged from the ED in Drogheda and and admitted electively in Navan for their procedure.
Cllr Wayne Forde warmly welcomed the news and said it made sense to have minor orthopaedic trauma cases treated in Navan.
“We have the expertise in Navan and it will save people having to wait long periods in Drogheda to be treated for this type of injury,” he said.
Cathaoirleach of the Save Navan Hospital Campaign, Deputy Peadar Tóibín welcomed  the decision to alleviate services in Drogheda by transferring people with minor breaks and fractures to the the Orthopaedic Unit in Navan. “Navan’s Orthopaedic Unit is a centre of excellence with a proud history and is well placed to take up the extra pressure in the region.“

Deputy Damien English welcomed the news, saying it would result in more timely surgery for patients.
He it was good that greater use would be made of the orthopaedic unit in Navan, which was already doing great work.
“Naturally I would prefer if patients didn’t have to go to Drogheda to be triaged, but it is a step in the right direction.'
