Martina Fitzgerald is RTE's new political correspondent

RTÉ News has announced the appointment of Kilskyre native Martina Fitzgerald as political correspondent.
 
Currently a member of RTÉ’s Political Unit, Martina Fitzgerald has worked as a journalist in RTÉ for the last fourteen years on radio and television news programmes including Morning Ireland, the News at One the Six OneNews and NineNews.
 
In recent years she has broken a number of political stories on the Nine News. Over the course of her career, she reported on local, European, Northern Ireland Assembly, Presidential and General Elections. In the 2011 General Election, she was RTÉ’s dedicated reporter following the Labour leader, Eamon Gilmore. Martina has also had numerous foreign assignments including the London bombings, the funeral of Pope John Paul II and more recently she covered the killing of British soldier Lee Rigby in Woolwich.
 
 She will be taking up the post with immediate effect. Commenting on her new role Martina Fitzgerald said: “I have a hard act to follow but I’m looking forward to the new challenge and working within RTÉ’s Political team.”
 
She succeeds David McCullough who has moved to PrimeTime following the departure of Pat Kenny to Newstalk.
