Slane man's ordination as Bishop on Sunday

Slane native Fr Denis Nulty’s ordination as Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin will take place on Sunday in the Cathedral of the Assumption, Carlow at 3pm.
The chief consecrator will be Archbishop Diarmuid Martin, assisted by Bishop Michael Smith and the Papal Nuncio, Archbishop Charles Brown.  The ceremony will be streamed live on www.dioceseofmeath.ie, beginning at approximately 2.40pm.
Fr Nulty (50) was named as the new bishop by Pope Francis and has until now, been parish priest of St Mary’s Drogheda.
He became Ireland’s youngest parish priest at the time of his appointment to Drogheda. He is the youngest of five children of the late Den and Nan (Balfe) Nulty.
Fr Nulty was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Meath in St Patrick’s Church, Slane, in June 1988 by Bishop Smith, in the presence of Bishop John McCormack. He was appointed curate in Mullingar where he served for 10 years until 1998. In August 1998, Bishop Smith appointed Fr Nulty as parish priest of St Mary’s, Drogheda, where he has remained until the present day.
In a message to the people of his new Diocese Fr Nulty said he was “honoured, privileged and humbled to have been chosen by Pope Francis to be bishop for and with you”.
The new Bishop’s coat of arms features a hill with a fire on top, recalling the lighting of the Paschal Fire by Saint Patrick in Slane, his native parish.
