Last year's participants in the JFK challenge

Moylagh JFK 50 mile challenge tomorrow

A massive 650 people are expected to take part in the Moylagh JFK 50 mile challenge, which begins tomorrow morning at 6am at Dromone Community Centre.
With hot, sunny weather predicted for the day, walkers are urged to take precautions to prevent dehydration, sunburn and blisters.
The organisers are hoping that funds raised by the event will help to make up in some way for the poor outcome of this year’s Daffodil Day, when the appalling weather in March saw less funds than usual raised by the Irish Cancer Society’s (ICS) main annual fundraising event.
The 50-mile challenge takes a route through Moylagh, Oldcastle, and some of the most scenic parts of north Meath and Westmeath.
The inaugural Moylagh JFK 50-Mile Challenge took place last year and raised a whopping €47,059 for the Irish Cancer Society. This year, 80 per cent of the funds raised will go to the ICS and the remainder will go to the the LARCC Cancer Support Centre in Multyfarnham, Co Westmeath.
Last year, a total of 95 people completed the full 50-mile walk, while hundreds in total took part, walking various distances along the route.
Not everyone who starts is expected to finish the 50 miles. They can do any distance, even one mile, five or 10 miles, or whatever they feel up to doing.
Patricipants are urged to have their mobile phones charged in case they need to call for help. They are advised to bring blister plasters and to use one at the first sign of a hot spot.
Put Vaseline on your feet before your walk as it helps prevent blisters. Bring Vaseline with you and apply to body where chaffing occurs.
Don’t wear new runners, don’t wear cotton socks as they retain moisture , change your socks half way on the walk and avoid cotton t shirts as they increase your sweat rate, and the material becomes heavy and damp.
Drink lots of water, don’t try a new high energy drink or bar on the day as you don’t know how your body will react and don’t forget your sunscreen!
