Gardai hunt gang after burglary rampage

Gardai are hunting members of a Dublin crime gang travelling around County Meath in a black saloon car who are believed to be behind a spate of recent burglaries in the county.

Witnesses have seen four or five young men aged between 16 and 20 travelling in a black Volvo S40 saloon with a ‘05 C’ or ‘03 C’ registration plate which has been sighted in the vicinity of a number of crimes in Dunboyne, Slane, Rathkenny, Moynalty and Drumconrath. The car also has been linked to other crimes in Louth and Westmeath.

Superintendent Michael Devine of Navan Garda Station is asking the public to immediately alert gardai if they see a vehicle fitting this description with four or five young men on board. Community webtexts in various parts of Meath have also been circulated alerting subscribers to be on the lookout for the car.

Supt Devine said the number plate may be changed but the vehicle has been seen with both a 03 C and 05 C registration and has urged the public to contact gardai if they see any suspicious activity involving this car.

He has warned that, apart from commiting crimes, the suspects are a danger to the public in general due to the dangerous speeds at which they are travelling and that the gang is travelling during the day when roads are busy.

He has warned people to be careful if they see this vehicle and to call gardai immediately. “We would prefer a call when something is maybe about to happen rather than afterwards. We are conscious of the danger posed by these people and will respond very swiftly,” he said.

The gang is suspected of being involved in the theft of €110 from an elderlyman in Rathkenny on Friday morning, 19th April. Two men called to the man's home claiming to be from the post office. One of the men was described as being tall and of stocky build with black hair and the other was small and thin and was wearing a dark-coloured baseball cap. They were described as being aged between 16 and 21.

The gang is also suspected of being involved at a burglary at Corstown, Drumconrath and an attempted burglary at Knockmooney, Slane on the same day.

On Saturday 13th April, a house at St Mary’s Villas, Moynalty, was burgled between 1.45pm and 2.15pm. Also that day, a house at Beechdale Park, Dunboyne was broken into between 3.45pm and 6pm

Anyone with information is asked to immediately contact their local garda station or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.
