Ella's gripping interview with JP Murtagh

Bohermeen native flat jockey Johnny Murtagh, one of the country's most successful riders, features on this week's 'Ear to the Ground' on RTE. On top of his game for almost two decades, he has experienced many professional triumphs and also encountered devastating hurdles, both professionally and personally. On Thursday night, in a gripping and candid interview with Ella McSweeney, he shares the personal story behind his headline-grabbing career. Murtagh is a fascinating character who rose from a non-equestrian family background to the highest highs the sport can offer. He tells Ella about his battle with his weight and the demon drink, speaking frankly about how he lost it all and reached his lowest ebb but doggedly managed to bounce back. From his apprenticeship under John Oxx to his extraordinarily fruitful partnership with Aidan O'Brien and the Aga Khan, Johnny Murtagh reminisces on the horses and people that have been central to his life both on and off the racetrack. Ear to the Ground's final programme of the season is on RTE One, Thursday 28th February, at 8.30pm.
