Dunshaughlin family on George Lee's Tax Return

Mother of two, Tanya Claxton, who bought her house in Dunshaughlin with husband Glen in 2007 and paid €35,000 in stamp duty, features on 'George Lee's Tax Return' on RTE next Monday night. They are just about meeting repayments on their mortgage. Tanya is unhappy with the household charge as she feels they have already contributed thousands towards local services in the form of stamp duty. She fears the introduction of a property tax. Tanya wants to know how the stamp duty she contributed was spent as she doesn't see evidence of spending on the local services in her area. As the Dáil debates a Tax Transparency Bill which aims to give Irish taxpayers an annual account of how their taxes are spent, George Lee meets Irish families wondering where their tax money goes and what they get in return. Amid anxiety around this year's Budget, George will ask how much of an individual's tax deductions go towards repaying Ireland's enormous bank debt. Finance and Economics experts examine Ireland's outgoings and whether any of us can afford them. And a psychologist looks at Ireland's particular approach to the concept of taxation and democracy. Monday, November 26th at 9.35pm on RTÉ One.
