The late Liam Carter.
Trim came to a standstill this week to pay tribute to a former chairman of the local urban council who tragically drowned in the Boyne following an accident.
There was a large turnout at St Patrick's Church, Trim, on Monday morning for the funeral Mass of Liam Carter, who passed away, aged 73.
It appears that Mr Carter had been fishing and it is believed that he slipped and fell into the river. The level of the river was relatively high for this time of year and he was not very mobile following recent knee surgery.
Gardai have confirmed that they received reports from two members of the public who thought they saw someone in the river on Thursday 9th August. Searches were carried out in the area but nothing was found.
A couple of days later, friends of Mr Carter became concerned after they hadn't seen him and reported this to gardai on Wednesday 15th August. Searches were carried out again and Mr Carter's body was recovered close to Newtown that evening.
