Googlers help clean up beach

Employees from Google HQ in Dublin, who helped to clean up Bettystown beach ahead of the annual sandcastle competition.

Some 18 members from Google headquarters in Dublin last week joined Global Kiter Foundation's regional officer Christophe Bernigaud, a Bettystown businessman, to help clean up Bettystown-Mornington beach, host to this weekend's National Sandcastle and Sand Sculpturing Competition.

The event was supported by the Meath County Council, represented on the day by Peter Brady, who supplied all the tools needed to help get the beach cleaned up. The weather also played its part as the sun was out and the clouds stayed away, making it a wonderful event for everyone involved.

The morning kicked off with an introduction to the Global Kiter Foundation, its mission and goals. GKF gives everyone a chance to get involved and to give back to their local environment and community by supporting local environmental action. Global Kiter Foundation is an international non-profit foundation which started its operations in May 2011.

After the introduction, and tips for clean-up, the team began their work. By the time lunch came around, they had already collected 21 bags of rubbish, a bicycle, a rusty mattress and all sorts of discarded fishing equipment.

The local BT Bistro was good enough to accommodate the team for their lunch, after which they collected another 22 bags of rubbish, a barrel and a huge plastic road barrier dug out of the Mornington sand dunes. It was an educating and fun day for all who took part.
