March launch for Kells school book

County Meath VEC will launch the much anticipated book 'Kells Vocational School - A Popular History' in the Alpha Building, Bective Street, Kells, on Monday 8th March. The idea for the book was conceived in 2008 by Frank Smith, head of finance with Meath VEC, and was brought to fruition by Bernadette Walsh and Elma McMahon. "Initially, the call was put out to the good people of Kells and surrounding areas to come forward with memoirs and memorabilia of times gone by. The editors interviewed former pupils and staff and their stories have helped make this publication very special indeed," said Ms McMahon. She added that many upstanding citizens from Kells and environs owe their education and careers to the vocational school in Kells. It first opened its doors to students in February 1931 and its function as a post-primary school came to an end in July 1988 when it amalgamated with the Christian Brothers' secondary school to form Kells Community School. Meath VEC is inviting former students and staff who wish to attend the launch of 'Kells Vocational School - A Popular History' to contact Bernadette Walsh on (046) 906 8200.
