Bridie Stringer, Navan

Bridie Stringer, who looked after jockeys from Noel Meade’s Tu Va stables for over three decades, passed away on 20th September last. There was widespread regret following the death of Bridie, of Commons Lane, at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, aged 79.

She provided lodgings and meals for the jockeys from the Castletown stables for 35 years, when her own family began to fly the nest and she had rooms available.

Paul Cullen was the first, and over the years many riders like Niall Madden, Jason McKeown, Michael McAllister, Daragh Burke, Peter Parkhill and Julie Lemin have stayed with Bridie.

Many of them returned for her funeral and escorted her remains to the cemetery with a guard of honour. She cared and loved for these ‘adoptive children’ as if they were her own.

A native of Pump Cross, Wilkinstown, Bridie (nee Meehan), was married to Christy for 56 years, with a family of four. She worked most of her life at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, as an attendant.

Many would know Bridie from the bingo halls of Co Meath, where she played five nights a week, and had many friends through it. She will also be remembered for the Christmas cakes and puddings which she made for many over her lifetime.

Deceased is survived by her husband, Christy; daughters, Kathleen, Philomena and Julie; son, James; 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters Teresa, Ita and Liz; sons-in-law; daughter-in-law; brothers-in-law; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Her funeral took place from St Mary’s Church, Navan, to St Mary’s Cemetery.

Johanna Browne, Rathfeigh

The regretted death occurred on 20th September last of Johanna Browne, Edoxtown, Rathfeigh, Tara, at Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, aged 83 years.

A wonderful mother and friend, Johanna dedicated her whole life to her family. She had a lovely sense of humour and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Johanna loved her parish of Skryne and Rathfeigh and spent many years as sacristan in Rathfeigh Church. She held a very keen interest in her parish including all the sporting activities that her family were involved in. She also supported and attended bingo in the parish hall in Skryne. She enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, nature and animals.

Johanna also loved her native parish of Summerhill to which she returned regularly to spend time with dear neighbours and friends. She enjoyed many trips away with the Summerhill Active Retirement Group and the Third Age Centre there.

A member of the Byrne family of Clonmahon, Summerhill, she was predeceased by her husband, Walter, in 1969, and son, Paddy, in 1998.

She is survived by her family, Christopher, Ann, Martin, Gerard, Declan and Helen; grandchildren, Derek, Laura, Gary and Lisa; daughters-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends.

The funeral took place from St Colmcille’s Church, Skryne. to the adjoining cemetery, celebrated by Fr Joseph Gleeson, Rathfeigh, Fr Thomas O’Mahony, Skryne and Fr David O’Hanlon, Summerhill.

 

Patricia Murray, Navan

There was widespread sadness following the death of Patricia (Patsy) Murray, Kilcarn Court, Navan, at St Joseph’s Community Nursing Unit, Trim, aged 79.

She is survived by her daughter, Karen Fitzsimons, son-in-law, Gerard; granddaughter, Kim; sisters, Chrissie Blake, Maura McLarney, Olive Fitzsimons, May Darcy, all Navan, and Ann Grant, Canada; brothers, Richard and Raphael Curtis, both USA, and Garrick Curtis, Canada; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.

Patsy was predeceased by her husband, Ronnie Murray, and her brothers, Joe, USA, and Jim, Navan.

The funeral took place from St Mary’s Church, Navan, to St Mary’s Cemetery.

 

Anne McDermott Mulligan, Dunshaughlin 

The regretted death of Anne McDermott Mulligan occurred at her residence, The Riggins, Dunshaughlin, on Sunday 7th September last. The late Mrs McDermott was predeceased by her first husband, Michael McDermott, in 1961, and her second, Christopher Mulligan in 1996.

The deceased was a member of the Hughes/Oxley families, who were prominent in the business and farming life of Kinnegad and surrounding areas for many years. Following the untimely death of her mother, she went to live with her aunt, Mrs May O’Higgins, who was principal school teacher in Batterstown at the time.

The late Mrs McDermott resided at the former home of the Haughey family. The late Mr Michael McDermott bought the farm from the late Mr Sean Haughey in 1939. Charles Haughey expressed an interest in visiting the old homestead and the deceased graciously took him down memory lane, giving him a tour of the house and the farm a year or so before his death.

Mrs McDermott was a very kind, generous friend and neighbour and her passing is deeply felt by all who knew her. She is survived by her sons, Michael and Patrick; daughters, Ita and Ann; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The funeral Mass in St Colmcille’s Church, Skryne, was celebrated by Fr Thomas O’Mahony (Skyrne), Fr Michael McGoldrick (Dublin), Fr Vincent O’Hara (Dublin) and Fr Willie Moran (Loughrea). Burial took place to the adjoining cemetery.

 

Conrad Sharkey, Navan

The regretted death occurred on 11th September last of Conrad Sharkey, Emmet Terrace, Navan, at his home. A native of Navan, Conrad was a very well-known and popular person, known for his love of singing and ‘60s music. He worked for An Post in his early years, and then became an employee of Eircom for many years.

Conrad was a devoted and much-loved husband, father and grandfather, and was always willing to help. He will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Rose; daughter, Belinda; son, Albert; granddaughter, Serena; son-in-law, John; sister Teresa; relatives and friends. The funeral took place from St Mary’s Church to St Mary’s Cemetery, Navan.

 

Louise Mullen, Naas

The funeral takes place in Kilcullen on Wednesday of this week of Louise Mullen, mother of showjumper, Cian O’Connor and model, Pippa O’Connor, who are both Meath-based.

She died suddenly at her home at Johnstown, Naas, Co Kildare, on Saturday.

Daughter of the late former Irish international rugby player, Karl Mullen, and his late wife, Doreen, she is survived by her family, Susanna, Cian and Philippa; siblings, Karl, Niamh, Mary, Gaye, Paul, Anna and Marc; grandchildren, Finn, Ollie, Ben and Sam; sons-in-law Stephen and Brian; daughter-in-law Ruth and all her friends and neighbours.

The funeral is arriving at The Church of The Sacred Heart and St Brigid, Kilcullen, on Wednesday morning for 11am Requiem Mass. Burial afterwards in St Brigid’s Cemetery.

Annie Kane, Kilmessan

The death of Annie Kane, Ringlestown, Kilmessan, at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, on Thursday 18th September last, was the source of great sadness.

Aged 86, she was a native of Ringlestown, and was daughter of the late Thomas and Agnes Kane.

She was a member of Kilmessan Lawn Tennis Club from the late 1940s, and also played camogie for Kilmessan. She was a member of the 1964 county championship winning team, and received the club’s hall of fame award in 1994. She also followed the local hurling team, and Meath football, and loved horseracing, attending many meetings throughout the country.

Deceased is survived by her sisters, Eileen, Nora and Marie; brothers, Don and Jack; brother-in-law, John; sisters-in-law, Marian and Ann; nieces and nephews; relatives and friends.

The funeral took place from the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Kilmessan, to the adjoining cemetery, celebrated by Fr Terry Toner, PP, Kilmessan, and Fr Laurence O’Connor, PP, Bunclody, Co Wexford.

Kathy Murtagh, Longwood

There was widespread sadness following the passing on 23rd September last of Kathy Murtagh, Longwood, at Mullingar General Hospital, peacefully, surrounded by her family after a short illness.

Aged 88, she was a native of Anneville. Clonard, and was a member of the Bracken family. Kathy devoted her life to her family and was much loved by all her extended family, especially her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many dear friends and very king neighbours.

A popular figure in the community, she had a great interest in people and her many stories were enjoyed by family and friends. Always young at heart she loved country and western music and was a keen dancer. Kathy lived a great life and was involved in many social groups in the area up until death. She enjoyed the simple things in life and took great pleasure in baking, cooking, knitting and especially jam making.

She was predeceased by her husband, Patsy; son, Frank and daughter-in-law, Anne. She is survived by her family, Marie, Desie, Pat and Martin, and their families; relatives, neighbours and friends.

The funeral took place from Church of the Assumption, Longwood to Mount Jerome Crematorium and her remains interred in Longwood Cemetery beside her husband Patsy.
