Councillors Tommy Reilly and Padraig Fitzsimons highlight the ongoing dangerous condition of Kennedy Plaza.

Repair work to the newly constructed Kennedy Place in Navan must be carried out immediately if "injuries to people of Navan are not to happen again this Christmas" according to two local councillors.

County councillor Tommy Reilly and town councillor Padraig Fitzsimons have both criticised the state of the refurished €10m plaza, with large parts of the stonework becoming dislodged and other sectiions falling into disrepair, they claim.

"Some 96 people suffered injuries as a result of falls in this general area last winter and we need to have things sorted for this Christmas," said Cllr Reilly.

Both Cllrs Reilly and Fitzsimons attended the Winter Readiness Information Day hosted by Meath County Council on Monday to help communities prepare for any anticipated bad weather. However, Cllr Reilly wondered how the council could be advising communities on preparing for the winter and not have their own house in order themselves.

"Kennedy Place is one of the main trading areas in the biggest town in this county and yet people were slipping and sliding all over the place last Christmas. I am calling on the council to have the surface properly gritted and prepared for shoppers," said Cllr Reilly.

His calls were echoed by his colleague, Cllr Fitzsimons, who said that action needed to be taken to prevent further injuries. "I am a business person in this area and, last Christmas, I was spreading grit to keep things right myself," he said.

"There are sections of stone that are simply falling apart and it is shocking to see, considering the amount of money that was spent," the FF town cllr added.
