President admits soft spot for Royal County during visit to St Pat's

There were great celebrations at St Patrick's Classical School, Navan, on Friday when President Mary McAleese visited the school for the first time.

President McAleese, who was accompanied by her husband Dr Martin McAleese, was greeted by school principal Colm O'Rourke, vice-principal Harry McGarry and members of the students' council.

President McAleese also met members of the school's board of management. The main student body was assembled in the gym, where there were over 800 students and teachers.

Teacher Bridget Hogan said President McAleese related very well to the students, speaking a cúpla focail and also asking them how the football was going.

She told the students she herself had lived in Meath and that her children had spent their earlier years in the county and that while her husband was not a Meath supporter, the rest of the family had a soft spot for the Royal County.

President McAleese spoke to the students about the importance of education and urged them to use their schooling wisely and make sure their gifts and skills contribute to society. She also encouraged the students to be as strong as they can be and always give their best. Mrs McAleese spoke about the spirit of co-operation and communities working together such as with the recent floods.

The school's traditional group played the 'Star Of County Down', directed by Laura Lynch, music teacher. Student Andrew Gavin also sang a song and President McAleese commented on what a wonderful voice he had.

Mark Gallagher of the student council thanked President McAleese for coming to the school and for her words of encouragement, and second year students Cillian Fagan and Niall Lyons presented her with a bouquet of flowers.

President McAleese left the hall and enjoyed light refreshments with members of staff and had her photo taken with them before moving on to her next engagement. Ms Hogan said the presidential visit had been a very special occasion for St Pat's.
