Two Meath sites nominated for heritage status

The Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey has extended a warm welcome to the inclusion of the Tara complex and Kells on Ireland's draft World Heritage Tentative list.

The announcement that the two historic sites were on the list was made by Minister for the Environment John Gormley this week. The sites are now potential nominees to the World Heritage List.

The draft list was compiled on the basis of the work of the expert advisory group established by the Minister.

The list sets out for each property a description, justification of outstanding universal value, UNESCO operational guidelines met, statements of authenticity and integrity and a comparison with other similar properties.

Mr Dempsey said that it was an honour that Kells and the Tara complex were on the tentative list. "As a local man, I am very lucky to have these two outstanding places on my doorstep. I recommend all people to get out and about to appreciate our heritage and culture. I urge everyone in Meath to support these two superior sites and vote without delay."

The nomination of any property from the new tentative list will only take place after consultation with relevant stakeholders and interested parties. The Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government is now inviting comments on the draft new list. The deadline for submissions is 5pm on 23rd of December 2009.
