Mr Downey was wholesome in his praise for those who were working hard to help the victims of flooding in Ireland and commended those present for turning up to show their support.

The walk was led by Broomfield's trained walking leaders, who were assisted by newly qualified first aid personnel from the area. Slane branch of the Irish Red Cross Society provided an ambulance and personnel for the event.

Gerard Weldon, chairman of the Broomfield and District Residents' Association, said a special word of thanks to the Slane Branch for their support as and their never ending work throughout the wider community. He also thanked the Red Cross movement for their work for the flood victims.

At time of going to press, the Broomfield 10k Flood Victims Fund had just exceeded €3,000 and the fund will remain open for a few weeks to allow further donations to be made by those who wish to do so.
