Disc parking is to be introduced at the schools and swimming pool in Kells, the new car park at the church is to become a short-stay car park and the Fair Green will be used for long-term parking, following a decision taken at a meeting of Kells Town Council last week.

There will be an exemption from disc parking at the school carparks during the dropping-off and collection periods and patrons of the swimming pool will get vouchers for free parking while using the facility.

At a meeting of the town council last week, councillors approved new parking by-laws and agreed to take over the administration of part of the school road, which is currently outside the town's boundary.

The new parking by-laws are likely to be operation in Kells early next year. A meeting of the Kells area council were expected to approve the new by-laws yesterday (Tuesday) and they will shortly go on public display.

Following consultation with principals of the local schools earlier this year, the council proposed introducing disc parking with an exemption in the morning and afternoons when parents are leaving and collecting children from school.

It was decided to introduce disc parking in that area because of fears that it would be used for long-term parking when the church car park becomes a short-stay facility.

Councillors have also backed proposals to introduce disc parking in the swimming pool car park, with patrons of the facility receiving vouchers for free parking.

The Fair Green in Kells will now be used for long term parking and a number of other changes will also be introduced, including the extension of yellow lines at entrances to estates around the town, including Headfort Park.

its great to see the council doing their absolute best to squeeze every cent possible out of motorists in kells. Next week, we'll have a plea from the kells traders that things are at crisis point, and if they dont have an upturn in business, many will go to the wall. Well just remember this article. Instead of encouraging people to shop and do business in kells, the councils short sightedness is pushing shoppers further away from the town. What next to generate revenue, disc parking in the supervalu and aldi carparks?

I know where your coming from tommy, I expect nothing for free in this day and age, but I found that even in the good times the council didnt keep the paths and roads in good condition in kells when they had no end of funding. Now theres a cutback in the budget they want to claw it back elsewhere. They should have started with the lord mayors visit to the states for st patricks weekend this year, im sure mr collins didnt fork out for that himself. If they want people to share the pain, fine. But first they can start by getting their own house in order.
